Underrated Jean-Claude Van Damme Movies Worth Rewatching
Share
Jean-Claude Van Damme made a run of 90s action movies that critics treated as disposable and audiences quietly kept rewatching. On Slept-On Cinema, hosts GrobeStreet and Stan Steamer have defended several of them. Here are the ones worth another look.
Sudden Death (1995)
Rotten Tomatoes: 50% critics, 39% audience. Stan opens the episode with a flat verdict: this movie kicks ass. It has everything, all the time, and then a little bit extra. The hosts argue the audience score should be far higher, since it is a hugely rewatchable Van Damme movie, and Stan calls it one of the most brutal films they have covered. Read our Sudden Death review.
Universal Soldier (1992)
Rotten Tomatoes: 34% critics, 46% audience. The hosts call it exactly as advertised. Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren kill each other before the opening credits finish, and then you get a second face-off. It was a hit, opening at number two and earning about $95 million worldwide on a $23 million budget. Complaining about it, they say, is like hating a great Mexican restaurant because you do not like Mexican food. Read our Universal Soldier review.
Timecop (1994)
Rotten Tomatoes: 45% critics, 36% audience. Stan calls it 100% fun and a time-travel movie that actually makes you think. It was number one for two weekends and remains Van Damme's highest grosser. The Civil War gold-heist opening, Ron Silver's villainous Senator McComb and the roof fight are the highlights. Read our Timecop review.
Double Impact (1991)
