Underrated Sylvester Stallone Movies Worth a Second Look
Share
Sylvester Stallone is a confirmed favorite actor of the Slept-On Cinema hosts. These three movies prove the point.
Over the Top (1987)
Rotten Tomatoes: 32% critics, 49% audience. Stan says critics and audiences were not prepared for its raw emotion and raw power. It is an 80s time capsule: slow-motion grunting, real arm-wrestling footage from a staged 18-hour Vegas tournament, and Stallone as trucker Lincoln Hawk. The hosts gave it a double-shelf verdict. Read our Over the Top review.
Daylight (1996)
Rotten Tomatoes: 26% critics, 37% audience. A forgotten mid-90s disaster movie that the hosts say holds up better now than it did then. Highlights are the opening 20-minute tunnel explosion with practical effects, a wind-turbine scene with no score and a grounded supporting cast. It earned $159 million worldwide on an $80 million budget. Read our Daylight review.
Judge Dredd (1995)
Rotten Tomatoes: 22% critics, 30% audience. Not perfect, the hosts admit, but so much fun. They love the comic-book visuals, the loud sound design, Armand Assante's all-in villain and Stallone's jaw. It made $113.5 million worldwide on a $90 million budget, so it was not the huge flop people claim. Read our Judge Dredd review.
